Engen MTB challange

Yesterday was the Engen MTB challenge, organised by PPA. I have not done many PPA MTB races so am seeded in B, usually it does not matter since A and B starts together. This time they decided to have a 2 min gap between the bunches, many fast guys in group B were a bit upset. There were also 2 girls in A so I was in a hurry to catch them;). Luckily Hanlie and Leana, who were my biggest competition on the day, were also in B. Craig and I went off very hard from the start and we passed the 2 girls in the first bunch after 3 and 4 kilometers! No one from group B could stay with us more then a few kilometres and we passed and dropped many A riders, my legs felt really good! After about 23 kilometers we caught the second bunch of A guys just as we hit some hills. I had to say good bye to Craig there and then, I just could not keep up at that speed any longer. I rode with that bunch to the finish.

At the finish I was only 4 minutes behind Craig and 4,5 minutes behind the first elite guy, my average was 29,8km/h and I think this was my fastest MTB race ever. I finished about 13 minutes ahead of Hanlie and Leana. I am very impressed with Craig who was only 40 seconds behind the first elite, even though he was riding on his own!

Unfortunately I heard afterwards that it was no prize giving since it was not a race today, I think they could at least have taken us up on the podium… But anyway, it gave us a good indication for the Cape Pioneer Trek that starts next weekend. It will be the first race me and Craig does as a team. It will be lots of fun but also very hard! We will have tough competition from 2 international teams and 2 other SA teams, I think all 5 seeded mixed teams have a good chance of winning the race.

7 days,534 kilometers,11 516 metersof climbing around Oudtshoorn!!
